What is it about the Arabic alphabet that most inspires you?

The Arabic language, with its rich history, has influenced many cultures and languages. Its calligraphy, celebrated since the 7th century, embodies elegance and complexity. I began with drawing and then moved to calligraphy. As I learned more about the art, I became increasingly captivated by the intricate details, the anatomy of each letter, and their abstract structure. There is so much to learn about each character, it takes years to master them. I often compare it to music, which possesses a similar abstract quality. We appreciate the aesthetics and beauty of music though it does not have a direct similarity or resemblance to the sounds in nature. This ability to evoke understanding and appreciation without explicit representation, is what initially drew me to calligraphy.

As an artist living in Dubai, what do you love most about the city?

Since moving to Dubai in 2002, I have witnessed the city’s remarkable growth and evolution firsthand, and simultaneously developed a deep sense of connection between my personal and professional development. Dubai’s vibrant and diverse art scene offers abundant opportunities for artists, providing a rich source of inspiration and collaboration. Working with artists from many nationalities, I've experienced the richness of having worlds come together, enriching my own work with varied perspectives. The city's dynamic lifestyle, blending tradition and modernity, was one of the subjects I worked on throughout my artistic journey, allowing me to explore and innovate in a supportive and thriving environment.

What specifically inspired your creative direction for the Jumeirah symbol?

I drew inspiration from the brand's celebration of Arabian hospitality, heritage, and culture. My initial sketches were more intricate, incorporating letters into detailed paintings. I shifted towards a simpler, more abstract design while retaining a unique handcrafted finish. The symbol, three flames, represents the warmth of Jumeirah's welcome, serving as a guiding light for our guests. The three flames represent our heart, with warmth and joy on either side, embodying the generous spirit of hospitality that continues to inspire the Jumeirah journey for today’s luxury traveller.

The desert has had a profound impact on Middle Eastern poetry and artwork - has it inspired your work?

Having been born and raised in a city, the desert was not part of my early life. However, moving to Dubai and experiencing desert safaris has significantly influenced my work. The vast shapes of dunes and hills, the play of light and shadow, and the desert’s serene presence subtly inspired my artwork, especially those with elongated horizontal lines and landscape compositions. This inspiration developed organically, becoming an integral part of my artistic practice, reflecting the timeless beauty of the desert.
