Gliding through the glistening waters of the Arabian Gulf, sea turtles have made a lasting impression on the shores of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. These ancient mariners play a vital role in the health of the local marine life, while their presence serves as motivation for our conservation efforts across the region.

As they graze on seagrass meadows and feed on coral reefs, our native Hawksbill turtles and visiting Green sea turtles contribute significantly to the underwater world, helping to regulate the ecosystem. But their importance extends far beyond ecology. For the UAE, these resilient reptiles are cultural reminders, inspiring environmental awareness and promoting a connection with the natural world.

We have always nurtured these gentle creatures with as much care and attention as our guests. Barbara Lang-Lenton, Director of The Aquarium at Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, is the pioneer behind the inspiring Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project, housed at Jumeirah Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Al Naseem’s turtle lagoons, where turtles are nursed back to health before they are released back into the wild. Her work has been instrumental in releasing over 2,150 rehabilitated turtles back into their natural habitats since 2004. Barbara’s dedication to the project has even inspired the launch of a turtle rescue hotline in collaboration with Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, a prominent member of the Sharjah Royal family and a renowned Emirati freediver fondly known as the 'Turtle Sheikh.'
