Life lessons from a master falconer
In the pre-dawn stillness, Xyrus Dilidili moves with quiet precision, stirring his falcons with a gentle touch, not just to train them, but to encourage them to aid him in warding off unwelcome crows that gather at sunrise. He tends to their needs, preparing them for the day’s pursuits with the care of a trusted guardian.
“The falcons are constant teachers,” explains Dilidili, Head Falconer at Madinat Jumeirah. “Just when you think you understand them, they surprise you with their instincts and independence. They teach endurance, patience, and the art of adapting to the unknown, reminding me daily that nature is far greater than us.”
His bond with these magnificent birds is one of deep respect – a silent dialogue of trust built over time. With piercing vision, commanding wings, and a hunter’s instinct, the falcons rule the skies with extraordinary precision. “There’s a peaceful magic in watching them take flight,” he muses. “Every movement, every turn, reflects the months of training and raw brilliance of their nature. It’s a privilege to witness, a reminder of the untamed beauty of our world.”
Falconry is more than a skill; it resonates deeply within Emirati culture, a powerful mark of the nation's connection to its land, traditions, and values. A symbol of strength, dignity, and resilience, the falcon has been immortalised in Arabic poetry and proverbs, passed down through generations as a revered tradition. In the vast, unforgiving desert, these birds were once vital for survival, their hunting prowess a lifeline for Bedouins navigating the sands. Today falconry is recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage, honouring the virtues of patience, courage, and perseverance that it embodies.
At Jumeirah, this timeless tradition is not a relic of the past but a living tradition – one that transcends history as a living narrative, shared through meaningful guest experiences that inspire wonder and connection. Preserving falconry, with its blend of discipline, elegance and legacy, is part of our mission to honour the region’s rich heritage. Through bespoke experiences, curated artwork, and storytelling infused with the warmth of majlis hospitality, guests are invited to explore a destination where tradition is cherished, stories are shared, and lasting memories are created.
Passed down through generations, falconry is nurtured through storytelling, mentorship, and hands-on learning. While not practiced by all Emirati families, those who do embrace it become stewards of a centuries-old legacy. Beneath the golden sun, young falconers are taught not just the technicalities of training but the deeper, unspoken connection between human and bird – a relationship that instils discipline, composure, and a profound appreciation of nature.
The falconer's journey is one of subtle devotion, a path where mastery is measured not in control but in harmony. Developing the necessary skills and understanding is a process that can take anywhere from several months to a few years, depending on the individual's commitment and the guidance they receive. In Dilidili’s words, “It takes several years to become competent, a lifetime thereafter.”
“Every day is a lesson in humility,” Dilidili shares. “The moment you think you have it all figured out, the falcon will remind you otherwise.” It is a falconer’s job to recognise their bird’s ability, instincts, and independence.
With every graceful ascent into the sky, these magnificent creatures remind us of the beauty of being in harmony with nature, the value of perseverance, and the privilege of carrying forward a legacy that soars beyond time.
