With one hand holding the extraordinarily long-spouted teapot and the other hand holding a tiny tea cup, our Tea Master, Ming Wu, twirls and swirls at dizzying speed. Before you know it, he’s bowing and presenting you with a cup of soothing jasmine tea.
Ming was 18 years old when he first worked as a server at a restaurant in Shen Yang, China. He used to watch the Tea Master with great interest and was impressed by his dexterity in pouring cups of tea.
He knew that it was something he wanted to do, so he asked the master to share his skills with him. At the beginning of his training he poured water into cups in the middle of a big bowl, with the goal being not to spill it. He had to do that every day as part of his training, and the training lasted for almost one and a half years.
At the same time Ming also needed to learn about tea. He had to discover how to choose the right type of water, cup and temperature for the right kind of tea, as well as studying the origins of tea. On top of that he also trained, running for at least two hours every day. His exercise regime also included bending and stretching exercises to help make his body flexible. This helped him to twirl and bend easily.
After almost three years of rigorous theoretical and physical training, Ming found himself working in Zheng He’s, our quintessential Chinese restaurant in Madinat Jumeirah, which he really enjoys. Seeing the delight on the faces of his guests when he performs his tea pouring act makes him extremely happy and proud.
As one of the very few Tea Masters in Dubai, Ming is passionate about what he does and he looks forward to welcoming you to Zheng He’s.
