In the heart of the Indian Ocean, where turquoise waves cradle unspoiled stretches of sand, Olhahali Island emerges like a quiet secret. A place where sunlit skies meet coral gardens beneath the water's surface, and the rhythms of life have been shaped by the sea for centuries. Here, the Maldivian spirit drifts in every breeze, carrying the scent of salt and frangipani, along with traces of ancient traditions and the delicate harmony between community and nature. Once a bustling hub for fishermen drawn to its bountiful waters, Olhahali remains steeped in stories of gathering and celebration. In this untouched paradise, rests Jumeirah Olhahali Island.

The island’s legacy

Olhahali, meaning "gathering point for a school of fish" in Dhivehi, was once a vibrant meeting place for local fishermen. Its shores would hum with activity as boats returned at dusk, laden with the day's catch, while families gathered under the palms to share meals, stories, and moments of camaraderie. Evenings were simple yet rich with togetherness: the crackle of fires, the aroma of freshly grilled fish, and voices carrying softly under star-studded skies.

This relationship with nature was more than practical - it was profound. The island nurtured a thriving marine ecosystem, where turtles, colourful coral reefs, and an abundance of fish coexisted with the people who relied on these waters. The island’s legacy is still tangible through fishermen’s picnics and overnight expeditions, resonating with a time when life was beautifully uncomplicated.

Design inspired by nautical elegance

Reimagining the Maldivian resort experience, Jumeirah Olhahali Island is a masterpiece of design by Miaja Design Group, helmed by French designer Isabelle Miaja. Inspired by the glamour of life at the ocean and the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, the resort offers a fresh perspective on island living.

Blending the sleek sophistication of super-yachts with the vibrant energy of South Beach, the resort's architecture moves away from traditional thatched-roof aesthetics, embracing ultra-modern, oversized penthouse-style villas. Each of the 67 villas, whether perched on white-sand beaches or suspended above the lagoon, features clean lines, curved forms, and a neutral colour palette that complements the surrounding environment. For the first time in the Maldives, every villa is crowned with a private rooftop relaxation area—offering a unique vantage point for stargazing, sunset moments, or quiet moments of reflection by the sea. Distinctive rooftop sails, rising elegantly above each villa, are designed to harness the wind’s power and the sun’s warmth, ensuring natural comfort and aiding sustainability.

Inside, the villas reflect a seamless blend of craftsmanship and modernity. Angled lines, contemporary fittings, and thoughtful details create a sense of effortless sophistication. With an emphasis on organic materials and harmonious indoor-outdoor flow, every space invites guests to slow down, and tune into the gentle pace of island life.

An invitation to explore

Days unfold with a sense of unhurried discovery, offering guests a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Maldives. Guided nature walks reveal the island’s botanical treasures, from vibrant hibiscus flowers to towering banyan trees. Guests may encounter graceful herons, curious hermit crabs, or even the white-breasted waterhen, the national bird of the Maldives.

For those drawn to the water, the surrounding lagoon becomes a playground for exploration. Snorkelling among coral gardens alive with tropical fish or diving deeper to discover manta rays and sea turtles, offers a glimpse into the teeming marine ecosystem. Semi-submarine tours provide an opportunity to observe this underwater world without getting wet, while coral planting workshops allow guests to contribute to preserving the reef’s biodiversity.
