For centuries, Capri has been a muse - an island where light, colour, and movement create a living canvas. Here, sky and sea stretch endlessly in shifting blues, while the Tyrrhenian sun bathes cliffs and terracotta rooftops in gold. Bougainvillaea spills over stone walls, its fuchsia petals vivid against whitewashed villas, and the air is fragrant with the scent of sun-ripened lemons.
It is this natural splendour, intertwined with Capri’s architectural traditions, that has inspired Patricia Urquiola’s vision for the new suites at Jumeirah Capri Palace. Designed to invite the island inside, each space reflects Capri’s essence and the beauty of slow, easy living. Her redesign extends beyond the suites, bringing the same sense of place to the hotel’s pool and bar areas. “I wanted to distill Capri’s identity,” Patricia explains. “The play of its natural elements - the water, the rocks, and the Mediterranean light.”
In each suite, this connection begins with the colour palette, drawn directly from the environment. “Soft whites, luminous blues, and warm terracotta emerged naturally from these surroundings,” Patricia says. This harmony extends through the materials - Palladian flooring, a tribute to Capri’s architectural heritage, stretches through the lounge, while handcrafted Vietri tiles dress the columns, celebrating the region’s tradition of craftsmanship.
“Artisans have been integral in narrating Capri’s unique story,” Patricia reflects. “The project would not have been possible without their mastery.” Her vision blends local heritage with contemporary innovation, a philosophy best exemplified in the torchon mirror, created in collaboration with Venetian glass studio 6:AM. Using traditional glassblowing techniques, the piece melds time-honoured artistry with a modern touch.
Beyond aesthetic refinement, movement and fluidity shape the design. “I was inspired by the movement of the sea and its interaction with the land,” Patricia explains. This rhythm is mirrored in the undulating Cimento plaster of the bedrooms, where soft ripples mimic the gentle motion of waves against Capri’s cliffs. Custom-designed furniture embraces organic curves - sofas shaped like water-worn stones, sculptural tables appearing as if carved by time - subtly echoing the natural formations of the landscape.
The suites are designed to be in constant conversation with their surroundings, each offering a different perspective of the island. Some open onto sweeping terraces that embrace the vast blue of the Bay of Naples, while others look toward the rugged beauty of Mount Solaro. “The terraces blur the line between interior and exterior, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in Capri’s natural beauty,” Patricia says. Arched windows frame views that shift with the light - from golden sunrises over the sea to the rich greens of Anacapri at midday. Sheer curtains soften the transition, creating a space that is both open and intimate, where nature and design move in quiet dialogue.
Among the rooms, Patricia finds a natural harmony in the superior suites, drawn to their seamless flow into the outdoors. “From the entrance, visual axes immediately lead the eye toward the garden and the sea, creating a sense of openness.” Meanwhile, the Palladian flooring extends outside, further deepening the connection to the landscape.
Throughout the project, Patricia’s approach has been one of balance - between past and present, craftsmanship and innovation, structure and softness. “Designing a hotel space is about crafting an inclusive poetic narrative, where the client becomes an integral voice in the story,” she explains. “I believe in fostering a positive empathy - a balanced relationship between people, nature, and objects.”
With these newly reimagined suites, Jumeirah Capri Palace continues its tradition of offering not just a place to stay, but a way to experience the island. Through thoughtful design, rich materials, and an innate understanding of Capri’s genius loci, Patricia has created spaces that do more than shelter - they invite, inspire, and connect.
