“Gold holds more than just a visual allure; it embodies prosperity, vitality, and hope, a symbol of good fortune cherished across cultures. In both Middle Eastern and Chinese traditions it resonates deeply as a token of lasting wealth and positive energy,” reflects Master Tan Guanghui, a renowned inheritor of Guangcai porcelain craftsmanship. With over 40 years devoted to nurturing the delicate art of Guangcai design, his art is not only a mastery of technique but a living legacy, crafted with passion, honour, and a deep respect for cultural heritage.

Born in the vibrant heart of Guangzhou, China, Master Tan’s journey with Guangcai porcelain goes beyond the aesthetic. It’s an intimate connection to a tradition that stretched back to the reign of the Kangxi Emperor, when the Qing Dynasty’s golden age flourished in artistry. It is not just pottery, it is history. Stories, culture, and soul, all embedded in the clay.

In 2008, this exquisite craft, often referred to as the 'weaving of golden patterns on white jade,' was rightfully recognised as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, its enshrinement a tribute to its timeless beauty and the role it plays in preserving cultural identity.

The creation of Guangcai porcelain is a meticulous and poetic journey, unfolding through seven intricate steps. “It begins with the careful selection of the finest porcelain, serving as the perfect canvas for designs rich in symbolism. Each outline is rendered with precision, while vibrant pigments infuse the surface with depth and vitality. Gold is delicately applied, shimmering like woven threads of sunlight, before being sealed. Finally, the porcelain is fired in the kiln, where heat transforms it into more than just a work of art – holding not only aesthetic beauty but a vessel of heritage, craftmanship, and the stories of those who bring it to life.”

Every stroke of craftmanship in these artworks is imbued with deep meaning. “This Chinese New Year, the snake is seen as a symbol of great wisdom and agility,” explains Master Tan, reflecting on the masterful golden snake artworks he created to welcome the Year of the Snake in Dubai. His striking creations illuminated the sail of Jumeirah Burj Al Arab in a mesmerising projection. “I feel immensely proud, not only as an artist but as someone deeply connected to this cultural narrative. Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is more than a landmark, it stands as a symbol of elegance and wonder, especially treasured by Chinese travellers. Having my work displayed on such an internationally recognised icon is profoundly moving, filling me with a deep sense of honour and cultural pride. This moment is a celebration of heritage, creativity, and the power of connection on a global scale.”

When asked about the emotional resonance he hopes his artwork will evoke, Master Tan reflects, “I hope that the golden snake in motion exudes a sense of dynamic vitality, its energy weaving through every gaze it meets. Gold, a symbol of abundance, represents not just luxury, but the promise of flourishing opportunities. With this creation, I aspire to inspire a message of vibrancy, optimism, and boundless potential.”

Master Tan envisions his porcelain artistry as a bridge of warmth and connection between Jumeirah and our Chinese guests. “The tradition of family reunions during Chinese New Year is a cherished ritual, yet, while many choose to travel abroad to celebrate, others find themselves working far from home, longing for those special moments.”

The golden snake, dancing through vibrant red hues, was designed to spark joy and a sense of belonging, especially for those separated from their loved ones. Its presence offered a shared moment of festive anticipation, allowing viewers to embrace the spirit of the New Year, no matter where they were. For Master Tan, at the heart of the vibrant Cantonese culture, the lion dance holds a place of profound significance during the Chinese New Year celebrations. This time-honoured tradition has journeyed far beyond its origins, its influence felt across the globe.

With a legacy of excellence, for Master Tan, the true reward lies not only in accolades but in witnessing a new generation embrace this cultural heritage with open hearts and curious minds. Some, inspired by these initiatives, have chosen the path of apprenticeship, dedicating themselves to mastering the craft, while others, as travellers seeking meaning, have immersed themselves in hands-on experiences that connect them to their roots. With every shared lesson, Master Tan reminds them that culture is not merely a reflection of the past, but a living legacy that continues to share valuable teachings. One that we carry forward with pride and preserve for future generations to inherit and cherish.
