Long before yoga became a global wellness phenomenon, it emerged in India as a philosophical practice centred on attention, discipline and the relationship between body and mind. Derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning "to unite", its original purpose was not fitness, but focus.
Today, that principle feels increasingly relevant. As modern life accelerates, yoga continues to offer something that is becoming harder to find: stillness. Yet where the practice takes place can be just as influential as the practice itself. Light, climate, geography and culture all affect how people move, breathe and engage with their surroundings.
Across four very different destinations – Bali, Mallorca, Oman and the Maldives – yoga becomes a way of experiencing place. Each landscape introduces its own rhythm, shaped by centuries of history, local traditions and natural environments that encourage a slower pace of observation.
Bali
On Bali's southern peninsula, spirituality remains deeply woven into daily life. Across the island, small woven baskets filled with flowers and incense appear outside homes, shops and temples each morning, while ceremonies and processions continue to punctuate the calendar year. Central to this way of life is Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese Hindu philosophy that promotes harmony between people, nature and the spiritual world.
Set atop the limestone cliffs of Uluwatu, Jumeirah Bali occupies a dramatic stretch of coastline overlooking the Indian Ocean. The resort's design takes inspiration from the Majapahit Empire, which ruled much of maritime Southeast Asia between the 13th and 16th centuries, incorporating water features, courtyards and open-air spaces that respond to the tropical environment.
Here, yoga unfolds against a backdrop of shifting weather systems and expansive ocean views. Early morning sessions take advantage of cooler temperatures and softer light, while evenings coincide with Bali's celebrated sunsets, when the horizon glows orange before disappearing into darkness.
Beyond the mat, the experience is contextualised through local tradition. Guests can participate in temple blessings or learn to make canang sari, the intricate daily offerings that form part of Balinese Hindu practice.
Mallorca
Along Mallorca's north-west coast, the Serra de Tramuntana rises dramatically from the Mediterranean. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mountain range is as much a cultural landscape as a natural one, shaped over centuries by olive cultivation, stone terraces and sophisticated irrigation systems introduced during the island's Moorish period.
Perched above Port de Sóller, Jumeirah Mallorca occupies a position between sea and mountains, with panoramic views stretching across the coastline. The setting creates a distinct atmosphere throughout the day, as changing light moves across pine-covered slopes and reflects off the water below.
Yoga sessions often take place outdoors, where the scale of the landscape becomes part of the experience. The stillness of early morning is punctuated only by birdsong and distant fishing boats leaving the harbour, while evening sessions coincide with the softer temperatures that settle across the mountains at dusk.
The wider landscape also encourages a more contemplative approach to movement. Walking trails thread through forests of pine and holm oak, connecting villages, viewpoints and historic terraces. Guided walking meditations and nature-based experiences draw inspiration from the principles of forest bathing, inviting participants to engage more consciously with their surroundings through sound, texture and observation.
Oman
Oman's coastline has long been shaped by its relationship with the sea. For centuries, sailors and traders departed from its shores to destinations across East Africa, India and the Arabian Gulf, while communities settled in sheltered bays beneath the rugged peaks of the Al Hajar Mountains.
Jumeirah Muscat Bay sits within one such bay, where the mountains descend directly towards the Arabian Sea. The geography creates a striking contrast: dramatic rock formations rise behind the resort while calm waters stretch out towards the horizon.
The environment is particularly compelling at sunrise. Before the day's heat arrives, the bay is often exceptionally still, with only the sound of waves breaking gently along the shoreline. It is at this hour that many yoga sessions take place, using the natural quiet of the surroundings as a starting point for practice.
Maldives
The Maldives presents one of the world's most distinctive geographical settings. Spread across nearly 1,200 islands and 26 coral atolls, the nation rises only a few metres above sea level, creating landscapes defined almost entirely by water, sky and light.
At Jumeirah Olhahali Island, villas extend over the lagoon and along the shoreline, oriented towards uninterrupted ocean views. With little visual clutter and few competing sounds, attention naturally shifts towards the changing conditions of the environment: the movement of tides, the colour of the water and the subtle transition of light throughout the day.
Yoga takes place across a variety of settings, from sunrise sessions on the beach to private rooftop terraces overlooking the lagoon. Some experiences venture further afield to secluded sandbanks, where participants are surrounded by ocean in every direction.
Programmes such as the Oceanic Yoga Retreat combine movement with breathwork and meditation, while individual sessions allow for a more tailored approach, including Yoga Nidra and pranayama.
