A natural island and world-class leisure and cultural hub with incredible views, Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi is home to premier cultural assets, incredible beaches and beautiful mosques. There is an array of wonderful activities to enjoy here, from exploring the Louvre Abu Dhabi to unwinding at the Saadiyat Beach Club.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Rising above a sprawl of pristine sand and surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi is an art-lover’s dream. It displays works from ancient times, such as the Bactrian ‘princess’ dating from the late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BC, to works from the contemporary era, like Ai WeiWei’s Fountain of Light. The impressive building was designed by architect Jean Nouvel, who was inspired by the natural landscape as well as by Arab culture and Abu Dhabi. Topped by a huge geometric dome rendered in steel, it took eight years to build, and the surrounding white rectangular buildings represent a Middle Eastern medina.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Abu Dhabi’s largest mosque and a gleaming architectural marvel, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is filled with amethyst-and-jasper-embedded columns, white marble domes, reflective pools and gold-plated Swarovski chandeliers. Covering an area equivalent to nearly four football fields, its construction began in 1996 and took 12 years to complete. The opulent monument was designed by Syrian architect Yousef Abdelky and involved over 3,000 artisans and 38 construction companies. It also holds a Guinness World Record for the largest hand-woven carpet as well as having one of the largest chandeliers in a mosque. The hollows of its domes are beautifully etched with verses from the Quran in gold leaf lettering.
