Join specialists in rhino tracking and darting, supporting efforts to protect rhinos from poaching.
Jumeirah Thanda Safari’s wildlife team work tirelessly to conserve and protect our wildlife, and ensure they have an optimal habitat in which to thrive. Guests have the unique opportunity to interact with the wildlife team during their stay. This can range from a presentation on key conservation and ecological issues to participating in field activities, including alien invasive plant control, erosion control, animal monitoring and plant surveys. The activities depend on what is needed on the day. Nature isn’t predictable. This activity needs to be booked in advance.
Rhino Monitoring
Led by a specialist rhino monitor, guests head out in the game-viewing vehicle before sunrise to find rhino tracks. On the drive, they will learn all about rhino, both black and white, including how to read their tracks and behaviour, understanding their feeding and territorial patterns, and how to identify individual rhinos from their ear notches. This interactive activity includes discussions about the threats rhinos face as a species and the considerable ongoing effort to safeguard them from extinction. *Additional charges apply.
Rhino Darting
Guests have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be up close with a rhino. This is a half-day activity where they witness the locating of the rhino by helicopter, darting of the animal, and assisting the wildlife team in conducting the veterinary or conservation procedure required, such as dehorning, before waking up the rhino and releasing it back into the wild. This is only available from May to August for a maximum of 9 guests and needs to be booked in advance. *Additional charges apply.
