Conservation

Established in 2002, with a profound respect for Africa’s history, cultural heritage and wildlife, the 16,500-hectare reserve embraces the Zulu philosophy of Ubuntu, emphasizing respect for nature and community. Jumeirah Thanda Safari’s mission is to be a responsible custodian of the environment, supporting biodiversity while collaborating with wildlife conservation agencies and rural community initiatives.

Rhino Conservation

Jumeirah Thanda Safari is a sanctuary for both black and white rhino. The reserve is actively involved in endangered species breeding, predator management and anti-poaching efforts. Rhino conservation initiatives utilise AI tracking collars to safeguard endangered species. With poaching remaining a serious threat, our dedicated antipoaching unit and specialist rhino monitors play a key role in protecting these iconic animals—particularly the more elusive black rhino, which prefers dense thicket. The team uses binoculars, drones, camera traps, and on-foot tracking. Several rhinos are also equipped with AI-enabled collars developed by Rouxcel Technologies (Pty) Ltd, allowing real-time alerts for unusual behaviour and rapid response by monitors.
