Jumeirah Carlton Tower serves up a Brilliantly British 90 Years Afternoon Tea
London, 26 April 2016: In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday this year, Jumeirah Carlton Tower has created a Brilliantly British 90 Years Afternoon Tea which takes a nostalgic look back on the culinary trends of the last 90 years.
Available from 18 April - 26 June 2016, the afternoon tea features a selection of savouries and pastries that evoke strong memories of the foods beloved by the British in decades gone by.
The savoury selection offers guests watercress and shrimp finger sandwiches, a popular filling in the inter-war 1930s; creamy coronation chicken buns, a dish first prepared for the coronation banquet of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953; and miniature Quiche Lorraine tarts which no sophisticated 1980s buffet table could respectably be seen without.
The eclectic selection of delicate pastries includes a strawberry jam sponge “penny,” a favourite of The Queen’s as a child in the 1920s, made with new season strawberries and decorated with an edible English penny; miniature bread and butter puddings topped with gold leaf and golden raisins, a much more indulgent version of that served in the rationed years of the 1940s; chocolate and cherry black forest gateau, ubiquitous in the 1960s; and a classic chequered 1970s Battenberg cake with apricot jam and marzipan.
Recent decades are marked with the appearance of a pocket-sized pistachio cupcake, complete with edible postage stamp, and raspberry choux pastry éclairs.
Homemade scones, clotted cream and traditional preserves round off the very British tea table treats created by the hotel’s talented pastry chef Stephan Will. To accompany their afternoon tea, guests can choose from an extensive menu of teas and infusions. For an extra special celebration, they can toast the health of H.M. The Queen with a glass of bubbly.
The ‘Brilliantly British 90 Years Afternoon Tea’ will be served daily in the Chinoiserie lounge at Jumeirah Carlton Tower from 3pm to 6pm and costs £45 per person or £55 including a glass of bubbly.
