Pop-up Canelé shop opens at Jumeirah Carlton Tower
London, 04 November 2015: Luxury Knightsbridge hotel Jumeirah Carlton Tower has opened a pop-up boutique selling tasty pastry delights, in partnership with Babelle, the creators of exquisite Canelés.
The Canelé is a traditional delicacy from the Bordeaux region of France and is described as the ‘new macaroon.’ The small pastry has a baked caramelised crust, a soft custard centre and is the latest trend in gourmet temptations. Its origin is linked to Bordeaux’s beverage industry, which traditionally involved the abundant use of egg whites to filter wine.
“At Jumeirah we aim to deliver imaginative experiences. These delicate pastries are this season’s latest trend and we are pleased to be the only hotel in London to offer uniquely flavoured tempting treats specially created for us by Babelle,” said Russell Durnell, the hotel’s Director of Operations.
The Canelés’ fillings include a bespoke Vanilla flavour filled with sweet Halawa paste only available at Jumeirah Carlton Tower. Other flavours available include a Mandarin Canelé topped with a milk chocolate ganache and candied orange, a Dulce de Leche Canelé and a Vanilla Canelé filled with Perigord Black truffle caramel.
After a day Christmas shopping on Sloane Street and Knightsbridge, guests can drop their bags off with the concierge and relax in the hotel’s elegant Chinoiserie lounge while enjoying a freshly brewed cup of tea and a Canelé for just £9.50. For a special treat, a glass of bubbly and a Canelé is available for £23. Guests can also visit the boutique and handpick a selection of delicious Canelés to take away, priced at £3 each, they make an ideal gift.
Notes to Editors:
The company was inspired by the mythical story of “Babel,” a place where the world first met and exchanged exotic goods despite the confusion created by the different languages spoken. “Bab” means “door’ in Arabic and “belle” is “beautiful” in French, so “Babelle” also represents a beautiful door into a world of sweet indulgence. The process resulted in surplus egg yolks, which were made into little cakes. The cakes were so popular that the French artisans who made them (known as Canauliers) formed their own guild in 1693.
Over the years, the recipe was modified through the addition of milk and sugar. Using the traditional recipe, BABELLE has created a unique range of eclectic flavours and fillings inspired by the very best of international cuisine.
