Jumeirah volunteers help transform lives in Nepal

Dubai, 29 October 2013: Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding, has donated 50 used laptops to an orphanage and school in Nepal as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy during the Eid Al Adha holiday. A team of 12 enthusiastic Jumeirah colleagues and their friends from Dubai, took 23 laptops to Nepal and the remainder were flown via TNT.

Over a two-day period, the team provided training sessions on computer basics and gave an introduction to the Internet and Microsoft Word to more than 20 children in Iris Nepal Children’s Home and 30 students in the United Scholars’ Academy. Iris Nepal Children’s Home takes care of 24 children aged 1-14 years and operates purely on donations.

The orphanage is based in Kolkanah, Kathmandu and provides all the basic necessities for the children. Before the donation, the children had no access to a personal computer and said the new laptops would change their lives forever.

The second stop on the volunteers’ trip was the United Scholars’ Academy. This is a semi-government run school based in Khasibazar, Kathmandu with 380 students, 80 of which are scholars and study in the school for free. Tikka Ram, Director of United Scholars’ Academy, said: “Before the donation, all 380 students shared just one computer. We will never forget the volunteers or Jumeirah.”

This initiative reflects Jumeirah’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibilityand supports the reduction of electronic waste. The project extended the lifecycle of the laptops by recycling and donating them to the less fortunate and encouraged colleagues to help those in need.
