The Top Five Restaurants in Kuwait City
03 Jan 2019

From illustrious international kitchens and exciting contemporary start-ups to trusty, well-loved stalwarts serving excellent traditional fare, Kuwait City is liberally peppered with places to eat. Pause between shopping and sightseeing for a colour-popping platter of sushi or unwind in the evening over a traditional Middle Eastern mezze spread. We’ve selected our favourite restaurants in Kuwait City for a flavourful sample of its exciting culinary landscape.

Housed demurely on the first floor of Harvey Nichols Kuwait at The Avenues, the impeccably presented dishes at Véranda resonate satisfactorily with the store’s chic designer wares. Refuel on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired portions that include expertly roasted cubes of salmon and jewel-coloured tabbouleh piled atop fresh garlic and mint labnah. Secure a table by the window overlooking the ebb and flow of shoppers along Grand Avenue for an initiation into Kuwait City’s ever-popular mall culture.

For the freshest seafood served alongside an inspired menu of international fare, Salt Restaurant in the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa is one of Kuwait City’s most prestigious restaurants. Sample its ultimate offering with the Salt Discovery Surf & Turf, comprised of Wagyu beef tenderloin piled high with succulent jumbo prawns and rich Lobster Thermidor. For a lighter option, the platters of sushi and sashimi are expertly presented, while Salt Restaurant’s legendary Charcoal Sweet Corn Soup epitomises comfort food.

Mais Alganhim

Tuck into authentic Lebanese cuisine at the charming family-owned Mais Alganhim on the Gulf Road. This popular enclave has been tossing crisp fattoush salads, blending deliciously smoky baba ganoush and stuffing vine leaves since 1953. Having started out as a cafeteria for founder Edmond Barakat’s employees, its popularity spread into the community at large and it has since transformed into a buzzing eatery with a consistent flow of diners. One of Kuwait City's more relaxed restaurants, its expansive menu is family friendly with plenty for vegetarians.

A stylish, minimalist haunt in the heart of Kuwait City, Tatami is a Japanese restaurant offering expertly presented sushi and sashimi alongside artful presentations of traditionally prepared classics. Crisp prawn tempura and fresh crab rolls rub shoulders with salmon teriyaki and black pepper beef. Edamame beans and matcha green tea are served as par for the course, making for a very authentic Japanese dining experience.

Arabic for “meeting place”, Assaha is a traditional Middle Eastern concept restaurant with branches as far afield as London. Its ambient stone-clad corner on the Gulf Road is all cosy private alcoves tucked behind tear-drop archways and broad tables to allow for multiple sharing dishes. The menu is satisfactorily packed with the usual suspects: traditional fresh tabbouleh and fattoush, plates of creamy hummus and mint-laced labnah, flavoursome aubergine-rich stacks of moussaka and meaty kebabs. Pick a selection of two or three sharing plates per person, and order more as appetites require.

With so many incredible restaurants to visit in Kuwait City, stay at the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Resort & Spa and enjoy a different cuisine every night.
