From Formula 1 to Ferrari: A Motorsports Guide to Bahrain
02 Jan 2019

There’s plenty to entertain during a visit to Bahrain: camel safaris, exquisite mosques, fragrant spice souks, spectacular landscapes. But for those with a fondness for the hot smell of burning rubber, the scream of tyres on tarmac and the full throttle of a 1,500-horsepower engine, Bahrain never disappoints. Home to the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, it’s a haven for petrol heads who know a 718 from a 911 and a Chiron from a Veyron. Here are all the ways in which Bahrain is the top destination for car enthusiasts.

Cheer the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix

One of the most anticipated events on the global calendar, the vast sweep of Bahrain International Circuit erupts with a deafening roar of revving engines and cheering car enthusiasts for Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in March. Fist pump the fastest drivers in the world as they burn around the track, and duck out between races to enjoy the prime hospitality in the prestigious Paddock Club. It’s not all about fast cars and high-octane entertainment, though. Exclusive pit lane walkabouts are an invitation to appreciate up-close the circuit’s state-of-the-art facilities.

Drive the King Fahd Causeway

Little beats Formula 1 Bahrain in terms of loud, star-studded, highly revved spectating, but there’s plenty for those who prefer a place behind the wheel, too. Strike out on the country’s wide open roads for some epic exploring, and be sure to include the King Fahd Causeway in your itinerary. An epic 25km stretch of bridges and causeways that connect Bahrain with Saudi Arabia across the Gulf, it’s a magnificent feat of engineering and a very rewarding drive. Take your passport if necessary—there’s a border station along the way.

Shop the Big Names

From Porsche and Maserati to Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, Bahrain’s capital Manama gleams with showrooms displaying all the latest models to inspire car enthusiasts. Discover rather more eclectic collections at the likes of Montana Motors, whose stock of well-loved classics often throws up a few surprises. The odd Mitsuoka and vintage Ford GT have been known to make an appearance—and all are a sheer joy to test drive.

Hire a Supercar

Driving in Manama can be a little touch and go—The Highway Code holds little sway on these roads. Take advantage of Jumeirah Royal Saray, Bahrain’s limousine service for a hassle-free way to get around the city. But if being chauffeured is not your style, hire a supercar for the duration of your stay. From a butter-smooth Bentley Continental to a zippy red Ferrari Spider, take your pick from the wide range of sleek, high-end road candy available. Once behind the wheel of your chosen steed, relive the drama of Formula 1 on Bahrain International Circuit’s 5.4km of prime racing track at its open track days (secure permission from your hire car provider first!).

Stay at Jumeirah Royal Saray, Bahrain for easy access to Formula 1 Bahrain on 28 March 2019.
