Its 3,500 square-metre Talise spa specialises in a multitude of therapeutic styles, most tantalising among them the traditional technique of hydrotherapy. We know how vital a thorough detox is to stress-free travel, and so we chatted to our senior therapists at Messilah Beach to create a guide to the ultimate detox.

“Wellness holidays are all about relaxing and de-stressing. As well as offering a range of wellness therapies, holistic activities and pampering sessions, they also provide the perfect opportunity to take in the local surrounding attractions and scenic destinations.”

“The most common types of stress we see in clients are muscular problems and emotional distress—a combination of irritability, anger, anxiety and depression,” the therapists tell us. “Allowing yourself the opportunity to relax is key to keeping those stress and anxiety levels under control. The therapists recommend simple massage therapies. “Quick and relatively affordable, massages create both mental and physical health benefits. Many studies confirm that the human touch releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps to counteract stress hormones.” In addition, they tell us that having even a quick massage ”reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, decreases muscle tension and pain, improves circulation, and cultivates a sense of well-being.”

 

Rejuvenating After the Journey

“Air travel, lack of sleep, navigating unfamiliar experiences, and jet lag” can all cause travel stress. To combat this, the therapists highly recommend Talise’s 90-minute Hot Stone Massage and algae wrap treatments. “The heat therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism, which in turn eliminates jet lag symptoms,” they tell us, while algae wraps provide a sense of well-being and relaxation. “Your skin is deeply polished then cocooned in a warm algae, which infuses its minerals, vitamins and micro-nutrients into the body and deeply detoxifies it.” This treatment “activates circulation, increases metabolism, relieves aches and pains and the stresses of travelling.”

How to Do a Treatment Properly

To maximize the effectiveness of detoxing treatments while abroad, start with the thermal and heat facilities to relax and unwind. “Although Sauna and Steam rooms are known to relax both your body and mind they also have many other benefits such as clearing your skin, relieving tension, removing toxins, reducing stress, relaxing muscles, and opening sinuses,” all perfect ways to prepare your body for your hands-on therapy.

In addition, the therapists recommend taking advantage of Talise Spa’s in-depth personalised consultation session. “Consultation is key to maximizing the benefits and effectiveness of your treatment. This consultation will enable the therapist to establish your needs, preferences and concerns, and then tailor your service, providing the ultimate benefits for you!”

The Experts’ Detox

No strangers to self-care, Talise’s therapists detox daily through diet, “eliminating caffeine, sugar, and fat,” along with “regular” exercise. On the massage table, they recommend “Manual Lymphatic Drainage, which stimulates the lymphatic system with gentle massaging strokes. The light rhythmical massage encourages the lymphatic system to eliminate metabolic waste products, excess fluid and bacteria.”

 

We are also recommended mud treatments, which “are very popular amongst spa aficionados. Slathering yourself in mud and enjoying the beneficial minerals either alone or with a friend or partner is a great way to begin a detox, or a fantastic reward at the end!”
