Combining extraordinary service with sophisticated decor in one of London’s most prestigious locations on Sloane Street, The Carlton Tower Jumeirah is a stylish base to explore the city. Here the hotel’s General Manager, Aaron Kaupp, tells us about its recent refurbishment, partnerships and what he most likes about being based in London.

What can you tell us about The Carlton Tower Jumeirah’s spectacular refurbishment?

Following a 23-month, £100 million refurbishment, the hotel has been transformed, with a new foyer, reception, Italian restaurant Al Mare, health club and naturally lit swimming pool. We’ve remodelled all areas and reduced our inventory of rooms and suites from 216 to 186, to offer guests more spacious accommodation for longer stays.

The refurbishment was carried out by the design studio 1508 London, which combined a modernist aesthetic with the hotel's glamorous heritage. This hotel imparts a connection to its history and its locality making the hotel unique, memorable and an ambassador for the destination. We’re hoping the new design will evoke a sense of place and belonging, and that we will awaken our guests’ senses with our contemporary twist on quintessentially British uniforms worn by the hotel staff, weekly floral installations and exceptional culinary craftsmanship at our signature restaurant, Al Mare.

Can you tell us a little about the building’s history?

The property has a really interesting history, having opened back in 1961. At the time it was the tallest hotel in London, with 18 floors. It became a point of reference in the area, welcoming international stars and socialites, and has built a world-renowned reputation for its impressive service and attention to detail.

What can you tell us about the hotel’s restaurants?

Our new signature restaurant Al Mare serves Italian cuisine devised by Executive Chef Marco Calenzo, an Italian who gained experience at Four Seasons Hotel Beijing and Hawaii, Les Créations de Narisawa in Tokyo and most recently Zuma in London. The menu features homemade pasta, ricciola al limone – thinly sliced yellowtail dressed in Etna lemon from Sicily – and chitarrine alla pescatora, which is pasta with calamari, clams, red prawns and scallops. Our glamorous lobby lounge serves simple comfort food while our afternoon tea – a collaboration with Kew Gardens – offers a quintessentially British tradition for guests to enjoy in beautiful surroundings.

What is your favourite aspect of being based off Sloane Street?

I love that we are in a beautiful residential area in London’s most coveted neighbourhood. Knightsbridge is just around the corner which is home to high-end boutiques, department stores such as Harrods, chic restaurants such as the Sloane Street Deli and Cadogan Gardens, a private space which our guests have access to. We’re also just a stone's throw away from Sloane Street, which is lined with brands such as Prada, Armani and Cartier.
