As one of the Mediterranean’s most glamorous destinations, Capri has become synonymous with superb shopping and designer clothes. From chic swimwear to strappy sandals we take a look at the best shops to visit and the artisan makers it is essential to get to know.

Luxury Italian and international labels

Many of Italy’s leading fashion houses can be found on two of the island’s chicest streets: Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle, which are easy to reach from Capri town’s bustling Piazzetta. Head here to pick up pieces from Gucci, Ferrè and Dolce & Gabbana’s latest collections, as well as shopping high-end internal brands such as Louis Vuitton and Australian outfitters Zimmermann.

Take home a bottle of local perfumery Carthusia’s Gelsomini di Capri to be transported to the island anytime you want, thanks to its delicate yellow mandarin, orange blossom and jasmine scent. More stylish souvenirs can be found at Laboratorio, where two sons carry on the tailoring traditions of their fathers to create handmade pieces that have a 1950s and 60s aesthetic. Their bold prints and silk scarves produced with vintage Italian postcards are not to be missed. While CeramiCapri’s serving bowls in various shades of blue and hand-painted plates featuring local lemons can be found at home décor shops across the island and will add a splash of sunshine to kitchens and dining tables.

Local design heroes and iconic items

Next, familiarise yourself with some of the creative talents and expert tailors who put Capri on the fashion world’s radar several decades ago. For example, Amina Rubinacci. Born in Naples, the so-called ‘queen of wool’ learnt her craft from her parents – her mother was a skilled seamstress while her father made formalwear for several European monarchs over the course of his career. Her delicate cashmere creations and elegant ready-to-wear collections make for a handsome addition to any wardrobe.

Of course, Capri is the perfect place to purchase a pair of Capri pants. Many fashion commentators agree that those sold by the original store – La Parisienne on Piazza Umberto, which opened in 1906 – are still the best. Make like Audrey Hepburn and order some made-to-measure cropped trousers or browse the colourful off-the-hook options.

The island is also well-known for its handmade sandals, and family-owned Canfora has been crafting these delicate summer shoes since 1946. Various styles are named after this little artisan shop’s most famous clients, like the K, which were originally designed for Jackie Kennedy.

Exclusive pieces at Capri Palace

This summer, the island welcomes another A-list designer to its shores as Capri Palaces Il Riccio Restaurant & Beach Club hosts a Dior pop-up store from 25 June to 30 September 2020. In celebration of the summer opening of this stunning luxury hotel, the store plays homage to the natural beauty of the Mediterranean with its natural wood interiors, leafy pergola and beach hut-style displays. Expect to find swimsuits, scarves and sweaters from the dolce vita-inspired Dioriviera collection as well as items especially designed by Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. In no time, you’ll have put together the perfect outfit for a delicious seafood lunch at Il Riccio. As the only one-Michelin-star beach club restaurant in the world, it’s a firm favourite among the fashion set.
