Staying Sustainable

Working towards a more sustainable future for us to cherish

Madinat Jumeirah is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and playing its part in the global fight against climate change and social inequalities.

Community Projects:

Jumeirah is targeting a 35% reduction in its carbon emissions by 2030, as benchmarked against 2022 operations. To achieve this, we have laid out the ambitions in which will be achieved with the support of a reduction in grid emission factors.

We are a proud partner of the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project. To date over 2,100 turtles have been returned safely to the Arabian Gulf, with annual rescue figures averaging over 100 animals. The project also runs an educational programme for school groups to learn more about the work undertaken at the DTRP, the importance of these incredible creatures and the threats they face in their survival. Taking place between October and April, over 1,700 school children from all seven Emirates participate in the programme each year. Hotel guests and visitors can also learn more about sea turtles and their conservation, witness their recovery and even participate in feeding at dedicated, state-of-the-art seafed turtle lagoon at Jumeirah Al Naseem.

Water Conservation:

Water scarcity remains a concern across, to address this, Jumeirah has set a bold target of reducing water consumption by 30% to ensure the sustainable use of this critical resource. Water-efficient toilets stationed throughout the resort as well as water-efficient showers in all guest bathrooms and changing rooms. Over 60% of Jumeirah’s portfolio is located in the arid region of the Middle East including Madinat Jumeirah. By reducing water consumption, improving water efficiency, and building awareness, Jumeirah can help in protecting crucial water resources while at the same time gaining from reduced operating costs.

Recycling Initiatives & Plastic Consumption:

Jumeirah is combating single-use plastic pollution by aiming to eradicate it from their operations by 2025. They've installed recycling bins and water coolers at various locations across their resorts. Global plastic consumption has surged, with minimal recycling, causing severe environmental harm. Jumeirah, with many coastal properties, is dedicated to preserving these ecosystems by seeking sustainable alternatives. Their initiatives aim to eliminate 9 million plastic water bottles from the environment, including the adoption of in-house water bottling systems and filtration. Notably, they've deployed the advanced NORDAQ water bottling system at Madinat Jumeirah and removed single-use plastic bottles from over 70% of their UAE portfolio.

Jumeirah aims to eliminate petroleum-based single-use plastics from its properties by 2025, transitioning to organic room amenities and non-petroleum-based plastics in food service. This move is expected to remove 22,000kg of plastic waste. Across food and beverage operations, Jumeirah is eliminating 1000km2 of plastic wraps and bags, along with over 864,000 plastic items like straws, cups, lids, gloves, and aprons. These efforts align with guest demands for eco-friendly travel options, promoting sustainable luxury hospitality.

Energy Conservation:

Madinat Jumeirah, spanning 40 hectares, has actively pursued energy and water conservation measures through efficient building systems and installations. Since 2007, they've reduced energy usage by 32%, employing technologies like heat wheels in ventilation systems to enhance efficiency during Dubai's summers. Recognizing the demand for sustainable travel, Jumeirah upgraded infrastructure and transport services to offer EV transportation globally, with charging stations available in 44% of their properties. Water stewardship includes efficient fittings, greywater irrigation, and Ecolab-supported initiatives saving 4.9M litres in 2022. These efforts not only conserve water but also save energy, with 330,000 kwh reduced through process improvements. In 2024, Jumeirah plans to further reduce water consumption by selecting locally-suited plant species for landscaping, promoting environmental harmony. These initiatives align with Jumeirah's commitment to responsible hospitality, catering to eco-conscious travelers while reducing the group's carbon footprint.
