The monetary unit is the Rufiyaa (MVR). Determining the rate for the US Dollar and the issuance of the currency is controlled by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). All major international credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are generally accepted in shops in Malé and on resort islands. US Dollars are also widely accepted and preferred on the resort islands.
