Over 700 swimmers race around Burj Al Arab to raise funds for charity
Dubai, 23 February 2014: More than 700 swimmers took part in Wild Wadi’s Swim around Burj Al Arab this weekend and raised over AED 240,000 for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) with the support of the UAE’s Red Crescent Society.
At the 12th annual charity event Thomas Dalgarno, from the UK, won the 1600 meter competitive men’s event with a time of 23 mins 11 seconds and Gwen Van Beek, from the Netherlands, won the female race with a time of 23 mins 47 seconds. Families and friends of all ages and backgrounds then enjoyed a leisurely 800 metre ‘open swim’ around one of Dubai’s iconic landmarks. The event was open to swimmers from the age of seven to 60+ who were all under the watchful eyes of Wild Wadi’s award-winning lifeguard team.
The funds raised will go towards MSF which works in nearly 70 countries and provides medical aid to those in need regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation.
Chris Perry, General Manager of Wild Wadi, said: “The community spirit as well as the focus on fitness and fun at Wild Wadi’s Swim around Burj Al Arab makes for a fantastic event. We’re delighted to see a growing number of participants, which means more funds raised for those in need every year.”
