Jumeirah Creekside Hotel unveils stunning origami display in lobby
Dubai, 26 May 2014: Jumeirah Creekside Hotel has suspended a stunning ornamental design in the hotel’s lobby, inspired by the ancient Japanese art origami, to replace the thousands of fresh flowers normally used during the hot summer months.
Traditionally, the housekeeping team uses up to 20,000 flowers per month to create the lobby’s floral arrangements. Throughout the summer months from June – August, flowers perish quicker due to the heat and consumption is normally even higher.
However, this year, Nadine O’Connor, Housekeeping Manager, decided to turn to the ancient Japanese art of origami to provide a more sustainable alternative. Previously Nadine had heard about the Japanese tradition called Senbazuru, which is the process of folding and suspending 1000 cranes together in a display.
Legend says anyone who folds 1000 cranes, will be granted a wish typically for peace, health or good luck. The crane in Japan is a mystical creature held in similar regard to the dragon and the tortoise and is said to live for 1000 years.
Nadine O’Connor, Housekeeping Manager at Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, said: “I was looking for a creative alternative to floral displays during the summer months and thought this project would engage the whole team and support the sustainability initiatives of the hotel. The use of bright colours represents diversity, hope and a bright promise. It’s an appropriate time to think about peace particularly leading into Ramadan a holy month of reflection and prayer.”
This environmentally friendly alternative and sustainable decoration is in keeping with the hotel’s corporate sustainability efforts. Around 200 colleagues took part in the folding and created the origami cranes that will remain in the lobby until the end of August.
