Jumeirah reveals steak as the Nation’s Favourite Dish

Dubai, 17 June 2013: Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding, has revealed that steak is the UAE’s favourite dish, while Italian is the cuisine of choice.

In the first ever country-wide poll of its kind, the UAE has firmly established itself as a country of meat lovers with the classic beefsteak receiving an overwhelming share of the vote, with 10% of people choosing it as their favourite dish. It was followed by popular seafood dish, grilled lobster (5%) and then the Japanese specialty sushi (4%).

The online survey, conducted as part of Jumeirah Restaurant Week which returned for the second year in 2013, celebrates the accessibility and diversity of the burgeoning dining scene across the Emirates, with an increasing array of culinary options on offer across a wide variety of price points. With more than 1,500 residents polled, the survey provides a unique insight into the UAE’s dining habits, including the most popular type of cuisine, how often people dine out and where. 

While steak is a widely popular dish that may not be a surprising first choice for many, the dish was a clear favourite across the board with almost two thirds of respondents that voted for the carnivorous feast being women. Of those that opted for steak, almost half said they tuck into their favourite dish at least once a month. 

When it comes to the UAE’s favourite cuisine, the fresh and vibrant Mediterranean flavours of Italy won through, with Italian food receiving 16% of the vote, followed closely by Seafood (14%) and Steakhouse and Thai coming in just behind on 11% each. 

The survey also revealed that more than a third (39%) of UAE residents dine out on average two to three times per week, reflecting the UAE’s passion for enjoying restaurant-quality food and contributing to the growing food and beverage sector.

UAE residents also showed that they are keen to broaden their culinary horizons and explore the increasing range of international cuisine on offer with Japanese, French and Thai the most popular choices. In addition, nine in ten residents said that they had dined at a Jumeirah restaurant before, with Pierchic at Madinat Jumeirah named as the favourite restaurant from the wide selection of world-class restaurants the group has to offer.

Commenting on the survey results, Christian Gradnitzer, Culinary Director at Jumeirah Group, said: “It is wonderful to gain such valuable insight into the UAE’s food and beverage industry, which we have seen continue to grow from strength to strength in recent years. 

“Steak has long been a staple dish across the world, however it’s fair to say that we are seeing a resurgence in its use here in the UAE, with the country’s ambitious and adventurous culinary leaders taking the opportunity to develop what is essentially a very classic dish and take it to the next level, with unique and often spectacular results. There’s so much that we can do with great quality steak and it’s great to see the people of the UAE choose it as their favourite dish.”

The online survey, hosted by Jumeirah Group, was conducted and distributed through various databases and social media channels. The research forms part of Jumeirah Group’s ongoing commitment to understanding their guests and their dining preferences to ensure that every experience is unique and memorable.
