Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa celebrates Mallorcan orange harvest

Mallorca, 26 February 2013: This spring, Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa, located on the rugged northwest coast of Mallorca, plans to celebrate the most significant agricultural harvest in the Sóller valley, and to introduce its clients to the culture of the orange.

During the months of March to May, the valley’s renowned indigenous Canoneta orange reaches its peak in terms of size and juiciness. The species is believed to have originated in the Sóller vicinity more than 700 years ago, along with other citrus fruits. The Canoneta, which belongs to the Blanca family of oranges, is of average size and has a pleasant, tangy flavour. Optimum ripeness is reached from March onwards, with fruit still on the trees in early summer. In June restaurants across the valley hold a week of culinary events based on oranges, a festival to celebrate the season’s harvest. During these months the welcome amenity in each guest room is a rustic wooden bowl of freshly picked oranges from the valley. Oranges available in such abundance are happily part of everyday life in Sóller, a real treat for our valued clients.

For centuries Soller’s oranges have been held in high esteem. Indeed, when local traders began exporting their produce to France, Canonetas reached the Royal Court, and Louis XIV declared that he would accept no other variety. In a deliberate gesture to this, the landscaping of the hotel includes some parterres (formal geometrical shaped gardens of French origin) in front of the hotel’s main entrance with orange trees visible to guests on arrival.

Today, the orange crop is managed by the local farmers’ co-operative of Sant Sebastia, and Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa will be organising visits for those interested in seeing how oranges are graded and selected for market. At the same time the hotel will be introducing some orange related dishes to its menus. Already orange marmalade is produced in the hotel’s own kitchens, and in the Barbaroja Kids Club, one of the many activities is to design a fun label for the jars.

Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa crowns a cliff overlooking the Port of Soller and enjoys extensive, uninterrupted sea views on one side, and has a backdrop of the Tramuntanas – recently declared a UNESCO Heritage Site – on the other. In between, lies the valley with extensive orange orchards in every direction.

The hotel includes 120 rooms and suites, two restaurants, four bars, two swimming pools and its sumptuousTalise Spa located in its own luxurious complex. Respecting the harmony of the landscape, the hotel is divided into eleven low-rise structures ensuring that visitors will experience a truly exceptional and natural environment during their stay.
