Stephen Murphy - Independent Non-Executive Chairman

A British national, Stephen Murphy was appointed Chairman in September 2012. He joined Virgin in 1994 as Group Finance Director and became Executive Director - Transportation in 2001 before succeeding the founder, Sir Richard Branson, as Group CEO in 2005 until December 2011.

He was also Chairman of the board for Virgin Atlantic Airways from 2006 and a non-executive director of many subsidiaries including Virgin Blue Holdings in Australia, Virgin America and Virgin Rail.

Mr Murphy is also Chairman of the Garden Centre Group, the UK’s largest horticultural retailer,Chairman of Byron Hamburgers Ltd, a UK casual dining
restaurant chain, Chairman of the Learning Clinic Ltd, a UK medical technology business and a non-executive Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee at the Business Growth Fund, a GBP 2.5 billion equity investment capital fund and a non-executive Director of RenRen Inc., a NYSE listed leading Chinese Social Network Company.


He is also an advisory partner of Ashcombe Advisers LLP and remains a Senior Advisor to the Board at Virgin Group. Previously, Mr Murphy held senior positions at Unilever, Mars, the Burton Group and Quaker.
