A sea-faring heritage

The UAE has 700 kilometres of coastline, of which 100 kilometres are on the Gulf of Oman. Along the Arabian Gulf coast, there are offshore islands, coral reefs and sabkha, or salt marshes.

The sea has been an overriding influence on the history and development of Dubai. One of seven sheikhdoms that form the United Arab Emirates, Dubai can trace its history as far back as 5000 years. Civilizations sprang up along the banks of what is now called Dubai Creek due to the area’s ample freshwater supply and easy access to the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea.  Its geographical position made it a pivotal stop in overland and maritime trade routes.

Dubai’s original trade revolved around the import and export of goods, primarily gold to and from India. Carried on majestic wooden dhows crafted from local timber, the 'City of Merchants' became famous for its trading culture and commercial vibrancy. Pearl diving became one of Dubai’s most thriving industries, as the warm, still Gulf water yielded some of the world’s finest specimens. However, in the 1920s, the Great Depression and the growing market for cultured pearls challenged the industry until it nearly died out. Dubai quickly recovered its position of commercial advantage by promoting its massive deep water ports and free trade zone – becoming one of the Middle East’s economic strengths. Oil, from under the sea, has further accelerated the growth of Dubai and has created wealth and stability for this prosperous land.

Today, the sea participates in a different way to the success of Dubai. The warm, clear waters and clean, safe beaches welcome millions of visitors each year to enjoy endless sunshine and a wealth of water-sports – continuing an age-old relationship between Dubai and its rich coastal waters.
