Castell d’Alaro

Castell d’Alaro is one of the most picturesque historic attractions in Mallorca. Located in the west of the island, this majestic ruin rises up against the sky near the town of Alaro and is a monument to Mallorca’s millennia-spanning history.

Visiting Castell d’Alaro

Castell d’Alaro is situated on Puig d’Alaro, a mountain that measures over 800m tall. At one time, this fort – which dates back to the Moors’ rule of Spain – spread across the entire peak of the mountain. Today, the castle’s fascinating ruins offer insight into Mallorca’s diverse history.

Walks from the town of Alaro to Castell d’Alaro are popular with residents in Mallorca and holidaymakers. The trek is well signposted, taking hikers through the picturesque Orient valley and leading up to the steep incline towards the castle.

Visitors who reach Castell d’Alaro at the mountain’s apex will be rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding scenery. Panoramic vistas of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and Puig Major, the highest point in Mallorca, are particularly striking. Certain parts of Castell d’Alaro even offer views as far as the capital, Palma de Mallorca.

Exploring other castles in Mallorca

Castell d’Alaro might be Mallorca’s most famous castle attraction, but there are many more to visit around the island. In Palma, visit Castell de Bellver, a captivating 14th century fortress, and Almundaina Palace, which dates back to the Arab conquest of Spain. Capdepera Castle in north-east Mallorca is another impressive historic structure, and this site has roots in the Roman occupation of the island.
