Bellver Castle – also known as Castell de Bellver in Spanish – is one of Mallorca’s most intriguing attractions. Located in Palma de Mallorca, Bellver Castle has towered above this lively capital city for over 700 years.
Exploring Bellver Castle
Bellver Castle is located to the north-west of Palma city centre. Situated on top of a small hill, it offers wonderful views of the city below, its vibrant harbour and the glistening Mediterranean Sea. It also has the honour of being the only round castle in Spain, and its stark Gothic style stands out clearly against Palma’s more modern developments.
Bellver Castle was built in the 14th century for King Jaume II (also known as James II) of Mallorca, and was designed by the architect Pere Salva. Throughout its history, the castle has been used as a residence for royalty and for several centuries was a military prison. It has also seen many battles and sieges.
Today, the most popular attraction at Bellver Castle is its impressive moat. It also houses a museum that offers a glimpse into Mallorca’s diverse history, with exhibits from the island’s Bronze Age Talaiotic culture, as well as from the Roman and Arab periods.
Other castles to visit in Mallorca
Elsewhere in Palma, Almundaina Palace – designed by the same architect as Bellver Castle – is an impressive royal building that fuses Gothic architecture with Arab influences.
Outside the city, visitors can hike up to Castell d’Alaro to explore its medieval ruins and enjoy stunning views of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Capdepera Castle and Santueri Castle also attract many holidaymakers.
