Diving in the Maldives is one of the Indian Ocean’s most sought after activities. Explore the area and discover rich waters, teeming with marine life as you navigate underwater caves, caverns and overhangs.
Diving highlights in the Maldives
The Maldives boasts some of the world’s most spectacular dive sites. As a result, it is extremely popular with divers both beginner and expert.
The Indian Ocean offers the opportunity to spot a wealth of passing tropical fish in its coral reefs, such as barracudas, parrotfish and sweet lips. Visitors might also encounter a host of crustaceans and colourful underwater plants, while manta rays and the occasional white shark may be seen away from the reefs. Wreck diving is also available in the Maldives, giving you the chance to explore sunken vessels.
Some dive sites are located near resorts. However, since many are situated several miles off the coast, "Liveaboard" diving is often the most convenient option. This type of diving cruise offers one or two nights’ stay on a boat, so you can make the most of Indian Ocean diving over a few days.
When to visit
Diving is available in the Maldives all year round. Late spring and summer are the best times to see sharks and rays, while December to March offers the best underwater visibility since it is outside the wet season.
