Frankfurt’s top attractions

In recent years, Frankfurt has been dubbed ‘Mainhattan’, thanks to its impressive medley of dominating skyscrapers. For a chance to see the city from above, take the elevator up to the observation deck of Main Tower, which offers stunning panoramic views. 

From here, walk along the River Main and cross the historic Iron Bridge to the southern embankment. This side of the river is home to the Museumsufer, a district that boasts too many museums to explore in a day. Highlights include the Stadel and the Museum of Communication, as well as the annual Museumsuferfest held in August.

To see Frankfurt’s historic architecture, visit the Alte Oper, a charming Renaissance building that was once the city’s premier opera house, and Römerberg, its main historical square. The Goethe House and Museum also offers a glimpse into the important German thinker and politician, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Shopping is a favourite pastime for fashionable residents and visitors in Frankfurt. The Zeil, its main shopping street, attracts half a million shoppers each day, while Goethestrasse is the place to go for high-end boutiques. Sample local gastronomic delights at Fressgass, a mile-long street of food stalls, and relax at one of the traditional Ebbelwoi (apple wine) bars in Alt-Sachsenhausen. Frankfurt is world-renowned for its live music and club nights too, with international DJs and musicians performing throughout the year.
