Oper Frankfurt – the main Frankfurt opera house – is one of Europe’s most celebrated classical music venues. Each year, Oper Frankfurt hosts over 200 performances and has been voted opera house of the year several times in its history.
Visiting Oper Frankfurt
Opera in Frankfurt has centuries-old roots, and ranks alongside the likes of Vienna and Milan as one of the world’s best opera destinations. Oper Frankfurt is its leading contemporary opera house, and the company is prominent on the city’s live music landscape. Its large scale productions attract residents and travellers, and appeal to opera experts as well as people new to the genre.
Oper Frankfurt regularly performs a variety of works, from revivals of classic operas to new productions. They are also known for showcasing a range of Italian, German and Austrian works, performing operas by Puccini and Verdi alongside Wagner and Mozart within the same season. The company runs a special programme for children and families as well, to introduce a younger audience to this classic art form.
Exploring the Alte Oper
Oper Frankfurt’s modern structure was preceded by the Alte Oper, a beautiful Renaissance building that was damaged by bombs during World War II. Although city officials planned to demolish the Alte Oper, its prestigious place in European opera history won the building much support and in 1981 it was re-opened as a live music venue.
The Alte Oper no longer performs operas and instead hosts classical music concerts, jazz ensembles and the occasional pop star, as well as private receptions.
