Little known facts about Jumeirah Essex House
The six story sign atop the Jumeirah Essex House building, now a New York City icon, was not erected until a year after the hotel opened. According to original accounts, the sign was installed to identify the building.
During World War II, the sign was blacked out.
Today, the sign, which can be seen in countless movies, television shows, and New York photography, is lit up from lights on the top floor of the hotel.
