Be prepared for a pleasant surprise: Harlem Week is in fact a month-long outdoor festival, held annually during August. It celebrates Harlem's diversely rich culture with a range of activities from jazz concerts and block parties to fundraisers and festivals.

First organised in 1974 by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce as a one-day event to lift the spirits of Harlemites weighed down by the negative images associated with the area, this festival is one of the largest cultural celebrations in the country, attracting millions of visitors each year.

The theme for 2008 is "Our biggest Day!". This year's highlights include: the annual "Hollywood In Harlem", an outdoor Cultural Arts & Entertainment Festival honouring the grand village of Harlem; a Children's Festival; a week-long block party and, of course, Harlem Day on 17 August.

One-off events are also scheduled in July and October. For further information, please visit the Harlem website
